| Abstract | ||
| This study was conducted in Baghdad city to identify the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections among patients with an age rang from < 2-18 years, who were outpatients attending clinic of Protecting Hospital for Pediatrics and Baghdad Teaching Hospital. The fecal samples were examined by the direct smear method and the concentration Method. A total of 627 specimens of faeces were examined. Parasites were isolated from 408 specimens. The overall prevalence of infection was 65.1%. Entamoeba histolytica was the commonest intestinal protozoan detected, with a prevalence rate of 30.1%, followed by Entamoeba coli (29.2%) and Giardia lamblia (22.8%). Hymenolepis nana and Enterobius vermicularis were the most common helminths detected with a prevalence rate of 5.4% and 2.7%, respectively. The highest prevalence (90.6%) was recorded among the 6-11 years age group with no significant difference between both sexes. The age distribution, sex, date of infection and symptoms of the parasitic infections were discussed. | ||
