| Abstract | ||
| In almost all his works, Saroyan's plays present the assembly of good and tender people who share the general qualities of loss, loneliness and estrangement as each is caught up in the struggle between dream and reality, what he really is and what he wishes to be. Their excessive goodness and humanity is what distinguishes them. Their pure nature lies in their dreams, goodness and sense of beauty. Being as such the goodness of their inner world collides with the materialistic and chaotic world outside which prevents the fulfillment of the ideal life they seek to achieve. In this vein, their way of living represents a vision of life they are not ready to abandon. Thus, they become estranged because of the excessiveness of their goodness. The opposite forces of reality may destroy them, but it cannot change their inner convictions. The destruction of their ideal world may take the form of disillusionment, unrealized dreams, or death. They transcend suffering, humiliation and pain by staying as they are: good and innocent. Being a foreigner originally, Saroyan experiences this feeling of loneliness that he projects in his characters. His Armenian identity is the main reason behind his preoccupation with the sense of unbelonging and estrangement. | ||
