| Abstract | ||
| Reference is considered as one of the important factors in text-formation and its coherence. In modern text linguistics studies, reference is not only of importance to connectivity, but it also contributes to the formation of text unity and organization. Anaphora pronouns paly a vital role in the maintenance of cohesion as they connect sentences coming successively and text units. Such pronouns are the commonest cohesive devices and most influential in the Quranic text cohesion. Commentators on the Quran have tackled the role of anaphora pronouns in the creation of text harmony and cohesion. In addition, they have touched upon the role of contextual factors in designating the anaphora of such pronouns. Ibin Ashwr is regarded as the most interested commentator who paid more attention to such pronouns and their types in the Glorious Quran. The researcher has tried to bring to light Ibin Ashwr's contribution to the textual analysis of the Quran by following up one of his analyses in studying the cohesion of the Quran. To maintain cohesion, anaphora pronouns are used for serving this purpose. The pronouns treated by Ibin Ashwr have been categorized and explained by the researcher by highlighting the bases and the contextual factors on the basis of which Ibin Ashwr's analysis was built. It has been concluded by the researcher that reference by anaphora pronouns is a distinctive feature of Quranic cohesion and harmony. Moreover, Ibin Ashwr dealt with the referential building of such pronouns on the basis of three dimensions: structural, semantic and pragmatic. This clearly indicates that Arab scholars are aware of anaphora and its role in cohesion. | ||
