| Abstract | ||
| Abstract The present paper discusses the religious trend in the poetry of Ibn Matrooh, an Egyptian poet of the 17th century. The poet received critical claim for what critics call the expression of the reality of the Egyptian youth at the time.The poet tackled the diverse arts of Arabic poetry, however, the religious trend was the domineering feature, hence, the paper aims at approaching this topic through five directions: the glorification of Allah and His unity, Good Faith in Allah, invocation and pardoning and the life to come, supplication and entreaty. Through the verses to be discussed, it has become obvious that the poet’s commitment to the Holy Quran and Islam’s code of ethics. The poet held many government posts in Egypt and these posts seemed to have had a trace even in his poetry. In addition to all that, the poet was morally committed, let alone that the poet felt a kind of a self-imposed religious and moral responsibility.The paper explains how the poet depends on a simple language in his poetry because the poet’s aim is didactic i.e. teaching religious truths in a simple language.
