| Abstract | ||
| Objective: The study was conducted to evaluate the levels of serum osteocalcin, insulin like growth factor IGF-1 and bone mineral density(BMD) in postmenopausal women with type2 Diabetes mellitus with or without osteoporosis and compare the results with healthy control. Also to study their role in the patho-chemistry of osteoporosis disease process and their validation as biomarkers for osteoporosis. Materials and Methods: Eighty-six postmenopausal women were included in this study with age range (47-72 years). Subjects were divided into three groups: Group I included 25 healthy postmenopausal women as a control, group IIincluded30 diabetic postmenopausal women without osteoporosis, group III included 31 diabetic postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. Patients were diagnosed as osteoporosis and controls by measuring bone mineral density (BMD), using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). In addition, fasting blood sugar, measured by spectrophotometer, hemoglobin A1c measured by Nyco Card by (boronate affinity assay) while serum IGF-1 measured by immunradiometric assay (IRMA). Osteocalcin measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: IGF-1 level showed a highly significant decrease (P<0.001) in diabetic postmenopausal women with & without osteoporosis to control group. IGF-1 level in osteoporotic diabetic postmenopausal women was positively correlated with BMD. Osteocalcin was decreased highly significant (P<0.001) only in diabetic postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. Conclusion: The circulating levels of IGF-1 and osteocalcin might give useful information about bone status in postmenopausal diabetic women. | ||
