| Abstract | ||
| Background: Ascites is a gastroenterological term for an accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity. CA15-3 (Cancer Antigen 15-3) is a tumor marker used to monitor certain cancers, especially breast cancer. It is found on the surface of many types of cancer cells and shed into the blood stream. Few recent studies have been studied the level of the tumour marker CA15-3 in the ascitic fluid to differentiate the malignancy related ascites from non-malignant ascites, But some studies showed that there is an increased in the level of CA15-3 in ascitic fluid of malignant ascites patients. Aim of study: To differentiation between malignant ascites from non-malignant ascites by using CA15-3. Patients and Methods: A sixty adult consecutive patient with clinically detectable ascites. Divided in to two groups, group I consisted of 30 patients with non-malignant ascites (aged from 18-80 years), Group II consisted of 30 patients with malignant ascites (aged from 18-76 years). All patients admitted to the department of gastroenterology in Medical City-Baghdad Teaching Hospital, Oncology Teaching Hospital and Al-Amal Hospital between December 2013 and July 2014. Paracentesis were performed on all patients under aseptic condition;CA15-3 was measured by the automated system for fluorescent enzyme immunoassay (FEIA). Results:The means ascitic fluid CA15-3 level in ascitic fluid of non-malignant ascites (controls) was 4.1±3.9, total metastatic malignant ascites patients was 15.34±6.03 which includes (metastatic adenocarcinoma (14.26±7.66), breast cancer (16.5±2.38) and ovarian cancer (16.97±4.14). Ascitic fluid CA15-3 level of total metastatic malignant ascites were significantly increased (P<0. 0005) when compared to non-malignant ascites (controls). Conclusion: From this study, it can be concluded that CA15-3 was highly elevated in malignant ascites patients compared to non-malignant ascites, hence can be considered as a good parameters in differentiation of malignant ascites from non-malignant ascites | ||
