| Abstract | ||
| AbstractThis study deals with the linguistic analysis of understatement. Understatement is a figure of speech which deliberately expresses an idea as less important than it actually is. To explain this device ,its various linguistic aspects are explored. Syntactically, the fact that this device is mainly triggered by negation is highlighted. The semantic perspective sheds light on its uninformativity and the pragmatic one is elucidated by examining Grice's theory of conversational implicature and cooperative principle. Understatement will be explicated as a manifestation of a violation of Grice's maxim of quantity. The relation between understatement and irony on one hand and politeness on the other will also be given. The practical part includes certain texts extracted from various books of the New Testament in the Holy Bible, namely: Mark, Luke, Acts of Apostle and Corinthians. The study ends with some concluding remarks. | ||
