| Abstract | ||
| This study was conducted to investigate the effect of melatonin implantation on semen quality of Holstein bulls as well as on fresh, cooled and cryopreserved. This study was executed at the department of artificial insemination pertaining to the directorate of animal resource ministry of agriculture, Abu-Ghraib (25 km west of Baghdad) during the period from 7th of December, 2015 to 1st of June, 2016 using 12 Holstein bulls of 3-5 years old and 500-750 kg live body weight the bulls were randomly distributed into three equal groups (4 bulls/ group). The first group was left without any treatment, regarding as control group (T1), whereas left, second and third group were subcutaneous-ear implanted with 54 (T2) and 72 (T3) mg of melatonin respectively Re-implantation of hormone was done, one month later. Semen was also collected from each experimental bull via artificial vagina, as once ejaculate per bull weekly to explore the effect of melatonin implantation on fresh, cooled as well as 48hr and 1 week post cryopreservation (PC). The results showed significant effect (P≤0.01( on the total number of motile sperm (TMS). The overall average of the T2 and T3 treatments was significantly higher (P≤0.01) compared with the T1. Total plasma membrane integrity of sperm (TPMIS x106) were noticed in T2 (48hr and one week PC as well as for overall mean) and T3 (fresh, cooled, 48hr and one week PC) as compared with the T1 group. The melatonin implantation has a positive role in improving the semen quality of Holstein bulls, which in turn enhancing the reproductive performance and fertility percentage of cows as well as increasing the artificial insemination productivity and owners income | ||
