The relationship of the media to conflict resolution and community peace-building is one of the important topics linking the areas of international relations and media studies. The term "peace journalism" dates back to the 1970s, where the concept provides a new gateway for media professionals to explore the structural and cultural causes of the conflict, its impact on citizens' lives, the content that reflects the commonalities of all parties to a conflict in a given society, and proposals and initiatives to mitigate the conflict.
The role of the media in peace-building includes several goals and stages. The first is to identify the causes that led to conflict in society, whether political, economic, social or cultural, and to identify the main differences between all parties to the conflict. Old and involve the largest number of citizens in the process of building bridges of community peace, and the fourth help build institutions that can manage conflicts and non-violence. According to functional analysis, researchers distinguish between seven basic functions that the media can do to build peace and prevent violence and conflict: the media as a source of information, as a watchdog, gatekeeper, policy maker, diplomat, peacemaker, and peacemaker.
Many countries in the south and east of the Mediterranean and the Arab and Islamic countries have been suffering from internal and regional conflicts that could affect their social fabric, which in the future will negatively impact their value-based cohesion. In this context, this study seeks to provide a scientific framework for the role that the media can play in solving conflicts in their various dimensions and in building community peace and in preventing the emergence of cultural conflicts between different parties in Arab and Islamic countries. The research includes a series of topics, including the historical development of the peace press, models and scientific frameworks of the peace press, and the role of the media in preventing conflict, leading to a vision of how to apply the model of peace journalism in the Arab and Islamic countries. |
