Abstract
Abstract The research aims to highlight the historical value of the cultural and intellectual life of the holy city of Karbala during the period when Iraq was controlled by the Ottomans for more than two and a half centuries, as well as to show the extent to which the cultural and intellectual awareness was experienced by the community and whether that awareness came from a vacuum or came from the spiritual and religious nature of the city and the presence of the holy sites which has been a popular destination for many visitors from around the world. Great pictures and images of the cultural and intellectual life had emerged in that period marked by the presence of poets who made great efforts represented by a lot of poems reflecting their love of the city and highlighted the battle of Al-Taff. Those poems varied in topics of love, politics, etc. The presence of scientists have great merits in the dissemination of science; as most of them were teaching in their houses. There were many schools of religion and science schools where many scholars and preachers graduated at. These factors helped develop the city intellectually. Besides, the existence of libraries having various books in different disciplines, enriched the city and community culturally and intellectually as well.
