| Abstract Since its inception, the city of Karbala has passed several stages of urban development. In a period of time, it has become one of the most prominent Islamic cities in terms of technical and architectural standards. This was due to the remarkable architectural interference that combined external influences with local traditions. The art of the civilizations of the Mesopotamia and the art of other Islamic nations such as the Persian and Byzantine civilizations have their significant effects on the ways of designing the physical structure of the holy city of Karbala specifically the Islamic architecture masterpieces such as mosques, religious schools, markets, heritage houses, etc. Construction is the most knowledgeable and most reflective aspect of human interaction with time and space representing the expressive and symbolic meaning of the ideas of the architects who built the holy shrines of Imams (peace be upon them).The Islamic architecture of the holy shrines has passed through a long history of sophisticated and multi-image phases which had left noticeable architectural reflections. Some of the holy shrines were burnt and looted by the Wahhabis and others. Then they were rebuilt and renewed in order to preserve their holiness and prestige. The Iranian religion scholars spent large sums of money in order to preserve the shrines of Imams and they allocated a lot of money to rebuild these holy shrines. During their visit to the holy shrines, some of them spent a lot of gold in order to enamel the windows of the shrines. This research has an introduction, four chapters and a conclusion chapter of the most important conclusions that the researcher has drawn. The first chapter sheds light on the role of Al-Qagarians in building the shrine of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) in Najaf. In the second chapter, the researcher explains their role in building the holy shrines in Karbala of Imam Al-Hussein and Imam Al-Abbas (peace be upon them). The third chapter is about their role in building the shrine of Imam Al-Kadhum (peace be upon him) in Baghdad, whereas the fourth chapter introduces the most notable reforms of the shrine of Imam Ali Al-Hadi and Al-Hassan Al-Askari (peace be upon them) in Samarra. | ||
