Abstract
Abstract Conducting lessons in physical education in academic studies varies Abstract Conducting lessons in physical education in academic studies varies from other situations because it relies mostly on traditional execution of lessons and gives no role to the students except the traditional role of following the orders of the teacher. There are many approaches used recently to achieve the goals of a physical education lesson. One of these approaches is the competitive approach which include self-competition, comparative competition, and group competition. This approach can be applied on basketball because it includes a lot of skills that are taught, learned, and developed in accordance with the age of the student. Using a scientific approach, especially an experimental one, is considered to be an important aim for the expert teachers of this field to reach the best approaches that can ensure the best results of the educational process. With the three competitive approaches: self-competition, comparative competition, and group competition, many questions are asked that form the problem of the study: do the competitive approaches achieve the development of some skills in basketball? Which one of these approaches is the best in learning process? The researcher used the experimental method for its suitability to the nature of the study. The study community is consisted of the students of the first grade in the College of Physical Education and Sport Science in the University of Babylon for the academic year 2014-2015 which forms 97 students divided into three sections: A,B and C. The sample of the study was chosen randomly to be 48 students. The approaches were distributed among the groups. The educational method lasted for eight weeks and the number of weekly educational units is 2 with the grand total of 16 unit in the whole experiment. The time of each educational unit is 90 minutes. SPSS system is used in the statistical analysis. The results showed that competitive approaches caused the improvement in some skills in basketball with a statistical significance on the level 0.05. The researcher concluded that the three competitive approaches: self-competition, comparative competition, and group competition have a positive effect on learning some basic skills and mental visualization in basketball yet with different rates.
