Abstract
ABSRTACTBackground: Derum is one of the natural "chewing sticks" obtained from the bark of walnut tree (Juglan regia L.) andused mainly by women in some countries as a tooth brush and as a dye for cosmetic purpose. This study wasconducted to test the effect of derum extracts on growth, adherence and acidogenicity of mutans streptococci incomparison to chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2% as control positive and de-ionized water as control negative.Materials and methods: Derum extracts were prepared by two methods (water and alcohol). Stimulated saliva werecollected from volunteers of dental students/University of Baghdad (21-23 years), from which Mutans Streptococciwere isolated, purified and diagnosis according to morphological characteristic and biochemical test. In vitroexperiments were done to evaluate the effect of different types of derum extracts on growth, adherence andacidogenicity of mutans streptococci.Results: Both types of derum extracts were effective in the inhibition growth of Mutans Streptococci and inhibitionincreased with the increasing concentrations. Viability counts of mutans streptococci in comparison to control, atconcentrations (20% and 30%) both types of derum extracts there were statistically significant reduction in the countsof Mutans Streptococci. Both types of derum extracts (water and methanol) at concentrations (10% and 20%) wereeffective in prevent adherence and retardation of acid formation.Conclusion: Both types of derum extracts (water and methanol) were succeeded to prevent growth, adherenceand acid production of Mutans Streptococci.Key words: Walnut tree, juglan regia Linn, Mutans Streptococci, antimicrobial.
