| Abstract | ||
| This study included 40 blood samples from patients with major β-thalassemia and has compared them with 40 of the control group. Patients were divided according to their age into four groups. Levels of S.GPT, S.GOT, S.ALP, B.urea, S.creatinine, S.ca++ and S.ferritin were measured. Furthermore, alkaline comet assay was used to estimate DNA damage in lymphocytes for patients. Results showed a significant increase (P< 0.05) in each level of ferritin and liver enzymes (GPT, GOT, ALP) in patient's serum, wherever decrease serum creatinine significantly (P< 0.05) for most age groups. Results of comet assay was revealed significantly increasing indication on damage of DNA in lymphocytes. We concluded that iron overload in patient's body which presenting by increased the level of ferritin due to frequent blood transfusions lead to liver injury in addition to DNA damage in lymphocytes because iron generates oxygen free radicals which capable of oxidative damage for macromolecule such as DNA . | ||
