Abstract
Abstract: The research problem is summed up by the questions if whether there are any changes (either diminishing or increasing) in the number of palms whether there are any spatial variation for the use of land in palm cultivation in Basra province and according to the administrative units and whether there is a relationship between the palm cultivation and some rural variables , the hypothesis shows that there is a decrease in the number of palms and there appeared a clear spatial variation in Basra province and at the level of the administrative units , The center of the district of Shatt al-Arab produces the highest percentage of palms cultivated and ranks as the most optimum uses of land in palm cultivation. The reason Shatt-a-Arab is the best land to use in palm cultivation is hypothesized to be the water supplied by the plentitude of rivers and river branches of the Shatt al-Arab. Whereas, the administrative unit that least supports the cultivation of palms and thus is ranked of relatively little importance is Al-Thager which ranks the last because its land is predominantly used to grow cereal crops and to breed livestock. There is a clear correlation between the use of the land in the palm cultivation and its relationship to rural variables ,but the strength and significance differ from one geographic area to another.
