Abstract
The aim of this research is to highlight Karbala's status and importance in the Arab-Islamic history and heritage, by studying the name of Karbala and its works in the Arab-Islamic geographical sources and to state the existence of Karbala since ancient history. It was said that it has taken its name from the Arabian word (Koorbabil) representing a group of ancient Babylonian villages of names and meanings of their own, some of them are associated with the name of Karbala especially and most prominent: Karballeh, Alhayir, Al-Taf, Al-Ghadhiriya, as well as the villages close to Karbala, namely: Aqr Babil, Al-Nawawis, , Al-Jeer, Nineva Babil, Amoraa, Mariah, Sfora, and Shafiya.
Among the advantages of the positive geographical sources in this research is the clarification of the origin and derivation of the name of Karbala, and the spelling of its letters, as well as the extension of this feature in the derivation of the names, meanings and indications of the villages around Karbala. It is likely thought that the origin of the name of Karbala comes from Arabic resources and dictionaries.
It is worth mentioning that the writings of the geographers and the Arab and Muslim travelers contain important and distinct linguistic information, transferred from dictionaries and linguistic works, and have pointed to some poems in which Karbala and its works were mentioned. The geographic sources have also provided us with information about many areas of Karbala shown exclusively in this research and have been not included in dictionaries and linguistic works |
