Abstract
Wheat is considered one of the most important cereal crops and it occupies the first rank among the main crops (wheat, barley, rice and maize). The objective of the study is to shed light on the actual situation of wheat production in Iraq in general and Diyala province in particular and also to estimate production function for the crop and to determine the influential factors on its production. Diyala province was chosen as an application model for the study as the data were taken through random sample of (85) farmers formed (5%) of study society (1688) farmers concentrated on Makdadia and Jalola districts. The results of the estimated Cobb-Doglus production function showed that variable capital was more influential than labour on wheat production in the study region as capital elasticity was (0.614) while labour elasticity was (0.429) as their sum was (1.04). This function ful filled all economic, statistical and econometric tests. as was the coefficient of determination ( 0.93 ), while the value of F (539.5). The study had concluded according to partial elasticities for the two independent variables that production is located within the second stage of production which means that there is possibility for increasing production by adding additional units of these resources . According to above results the study recommends to encourage wheat cultivation by following an efficient agricultural price policy taking in side ration the farmer and consumer interests by subsidizing inputs proportional with their increasing prices .
