| ABSTRACTBackground: Dry socket is the most common complication in the healing of wounds following the extraction of teeth,this studywas performed to reduce the incidence of this complication.Material and methods: 150 patients were involved in this study; they were divided into two groups, an experimentalgroup in which the patient's mouth was rinsed with chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2% preoperativelyand postoperatively,and a control group in which the patient's mouth was rinsed with a normal saline.Results: It had shown that the incidence was reduced from 4% in the control group to 1.3% in the experimentalgroup.Conclusion: Although the incidence of dry socket in this study was reduced to 1.3%, but complete prevention wasdifficult to obtain due to the fact that there are several factors play a role in the development of this condition.Key words: Dry socket, prevention, chlorhexidine.
