Abstract
This is the first attempt in Iraq to accomplish attenuation of the local virulent goat pox virus (GPV) (Harir Strain) following serial passages in cell culture made from secondary lamb testis. The degree of attenuation was evaluated by titrating the virus of passages 28, 34, 40 and 50 intradermally in the skin of goats. Passage 50 GPV was adequately attenuated as judged reaction and by absence of both generalized pox infection and temperature response in goats. Passage 50 GPV was studied further by intradermal inoculation of different dilutions of the virus in goats to determine the immunological response by serum neutralization test. Antibodies were detected one week after inoculation and all vaccinated animals rested challenge with virulent GPV intradermal inoculation of 2x10³ TCID 50/0.1 ml of attenuated GPV in goat generated a medium local reaction, mild temperature response and a relatively high titer.
