| Abstract | ||
| Thyroid hormones are important for weight, metabolism, appetite regulation, energy production, hence thyroid dysfunction and obesity are related issues. Obesity has been linked to metabolic disorders and weakened thyroid function. The presented work sought to ascertain the association between weight and thyroid hormone analysis results (T3, T4, and TSH) among patients attending hospitals in the western Iraqi provinces of Fallujah, Karma, Anah, and Haditha. Blood samples were taken from patients: 40 samples from males, 98 samples from females, and 7 samples from children under the age of ten from the four-study region. The results showed that 14 male patients were suffering from the possibility of thyroid disease, four of whom were obese and one patient was underweight, and 65 female patients were suffering from the possibility of thyroid disease, 28 of whom were obese and one was underweight. As for children under the age of ten, 5 of them were suffering from the possibility of thyroid disease, 3 of them were obese and two were underweight. The study showed that females are more susceptible to thyroid diseases, at a rate of 74.4%. The study also showed that the Karma area is the most affected, at a rate of 53.3%. There are several factors that may cause a rise in the incidence of thyroid diseases, including genetic, psychological, the spread of factories and wars. | ||
