| Abstract | ||
| Occupational exposure to inhalational anesthetics in surgical settings poses a potential yet often overlooked risk to the health of healthcare professionals. This study investigates the biochemical effects of such exposure among anesthesiologists in Mosul hospitals by assessing markers related to liver and kidney function. The measured parameters included the activities of liver enzymes ,as well as serum concentrations of total bilirubin and creatinine. Blood samples were obtained from 80 anesthesiologists non-smoking, non- fasting divided into two exposed groups: Group I (exposed to isoflurane) ,Group II (exposed to sevoflurane) and total exposed (exposed to isoflurane and sevoflurane )These were compared to 30 healthy, non-smoking males with no history of exposure (control group). The results revealed varying degrees of alteration in the biochemical markers. Serum total bilirubin showed a non-significant increase across exposed groups compared to controls. Creatinine levels were significantly elevated in all exposed individuals, with differences noted based on the type of anesthetic used. Alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase activities showed non-significant increases, while alkaline phosphatase activity exhibited a statistically significant rise among exposed participants. These findings highlight the potential health implications of chronic exposure to anesthetic gases and underscore the need for enhanced occupational safety protocols in operating room environments. | ||
