Abstract
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is considered one of the complex psychological disorders that generates extensive debate in clinical and research circles. This disorder is characterized by the presence of multiple identities or self-states that alternate in controlling the individual's behavior and cognitive processes, accompanied by memory loss that exceeds ordinary forgetfulness. Symptoms appear in varying degrees of intensity and form, often associated with experiences of depersonalization and derealization, in addition to a wide range of emotional and cognitive symptoms. Literature indicates that early trauma, especially in childhood, plays a pivotal role in the development of the disorder, as the mind employs dissociative mechanisms to protect the individual from the psychological pain associated with those experiences. Diagnosis is made according to DSM-5 criteria, which focus on the presence of identity disruption and memory loss, while excluding organic causes or the effects of psychoactive substances. Psychotherapy is considered the cornerstone in dealing with DID, as it aims to achieve patient stability and enhance integration among the different identities. Medications can also play a role in managing accompanying symptoms such as depression and anxiety. Cultural and social dimensions are crucial in shaping the experience of the disorder, as interpretations of dissociative phenomena vary across cultures, affecting help-seeking and treatment. Recent research developments focus on supporting biological indicators and neuroimaging to better understand the mechanisms of the disorder and develop more precise therapeutic protocols.
