Abstract
The effects of single and double inoculation of rhizobia (R) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on two major pulses grown in saline-sodic soils were examined in a greenhouse pot experiment. The treatments were set up using a completely randomized design (CRD) involving organic matter (OM), three levels of inorganic fertilizer (NPSB 25, 50, and 75%), the control, and the biofertilizers AMF and rhizobium. After 60 days, data on growth parameters were collected, and statistical analysis conducted using SPSS version 20.0. Agronomic parameters revealed that single and double inoculation had a substantial (P≤ 0.05) effect on all treatments. The OM treatment and double inoculation (R+M) resulted in the tallest plants. For the sodic soils of Alage, faba bean measurements were higher in the R+M+50%NPSB treatment followed by haricot bean. The optimum results for the saline Ziway soils were obtained with OM+25%NPSB and R+50%NPSB in the faba bean, while single OM treatment and R +M+25%NPSB achieved better results for haricot beans. In addition, as compared to single AMF and R inoculations and controls, dual inoculants (AMF+R) treated with OM amendments and three NPSB fertilizer levels performed much better. Thus, for the saline-sodic soils of Alage and Ziway, adding organic matter and biofertilizer inoculation at the lowest and medium NPSB levels enhanced the growth characteristics of faba and haricot beans, nodulation, and nutrient uptake. Finally, for long-term agricultural productivity on the test soils, organic matter and single and dual bioinoculants are recommended, with additional field trials to corroborate greenhouse results
