| Abstract | ||
| The United Nations Charter, under Chapter Vll, authorizes the Security Council to take appropriate measures, including the imposition of economic sanctions, when there is a threat to international peace and security. this provides a solid legal basis for economic sanctions, especially when the sanctions decisions are supported by the Council members, although the effects of these sanctions are not without controversy. Moreover, some countries or international organizations continue to impose economic sanctions unilaterally or multilaterally without clear authorization from the United Nations Security Council, the latter are widely criticized for violating the principle of state sovereignty and the rule of law and for risking violating other principles of international law. Moreover, economic sanctions, whether multilateral or unilateral, carry the risk of violating human rights law and international humanitarian law. Whereas the intended objective of these sanctions is to exert more peaceful efforts to resolve international disputes before resorting to military means, but given the contradiction between the two realities, between the need to impose economic sanctions and their harmful effects, It is imperative that further discussions and efforts are made to examine the legitimacy of these sanctions and their impact on human rights, to ensure that economic sanctions programmes are bound by a legal system that ensures they are humane in their implementation and impact. | ||
