| Background Preeclampsia is a serious public health burden that affects the lives of women and their children. Midkine is a secreted protein that has been recently recognized to play a role in the central inflammatory response mechanism that governs injury responses, as well as numerous autoimmune, inflammatory, and cancer pathologies. Objective To compare serum midkine levels between pregnant women with and without pre-eclampsia Methods A comparative cross-sectional study included 100 pregnant women, 50 pregnant women diagnosed with preeclampsia, compared to another 50 pregnant women of similar gestational age (≥24 weeks) and with normal blood pressure. Data were collected, and a blood sample for midkine was obtained. Mean and standard deviation were used to present the continuous variables. Results Midkine levels showed a significant difference between the two groups. Women with pre-eclampsia had higher levels of midkine in comparison to women with normal pregnancy (0.40 vs 0.28 ng/ml) (P value <0.001). The value of midkine that is associated with pre-eclampsia cases was 0.321 ng/ml with a sensitivity of 76% and specificity of 74%. Conclusions Midkine is a new biomarker that might have a role in the diagnosis of preeclampsia, which might affect the outcomes of preeclamptic pregnant women.
