Abstract
Aims: This research aims to examine religious land uses in the city of Fallujah, a city characterized by a high density of mosques and a diversity of religious functions, as well as to investigate the developmental stages of these uses from the city's inception to the present day. It further seeks to uncover the social, religious, and urban factors contributing to this evolution, with particular emphasis on the role of the population's adherence to Islamic values, and the influence of religious scholars and institutions in reinforcing the city's religious fabric and expanding its spatial diffusion. Methodology: The research adopted a descriptive-analytical approach, conducting a comprehensive field survey of mosques and other religious land uses within Fallujah. Data were collected using a questionnaire form specifically designed for this purpose. Cartographic methods were also employed to produce maps illustrating the spatial distribution of religious land uses across the city's various developmental stages, thereby enabling the analysis of spatiotemporal changes and an understanding of the relationship between urban growth and the expansion of religious land uses. Direct field data and interviews were additionally utilized to enhance the accuracy and reliability of the findings. Results: Following statistical analysis of the data, the results indicate that religious land uses in Fallujah have undergone six major developmental stages, which clearly reflect the urban and demographic transformations experienced by the city over time. The findings further demonstrate that adherence to Islamic values and principles, alongside the active role of religious scholars, preachers, and religious institutions, has had a significant impact on the increasing number of mosques, the diversification of religious land uses, and their proliferation across various neighborhoods of the city. The results also reveal a close relationship between the city's urban expansion and the growing demand for religious facilities commensurate with the increasing population. Conclusions: It can be concluded that religious land uses in Fallujah represent a direct reflection of the urban and social evolution the city has undergone throughout its various historical phases, and that religious and social factors have played a pivotal role in shaping this pattern of land use. The research further affirms that the study of religious land uses contributes to understanding the city's spatial structure and its development over time, highlighting the significance of religion as a fundamental factor guiding urban growth and organizing the urban fabric of Fallujah. The findings underscore the necessity of documenting these land uses and pursuing further research on them in the future.
