Abstract
Seminal fluid analysis is an essential screening test, expresses critical information about sperms count, concentration, progressive motility, and morphology. Sperm production and maturation usually under the control of pituitary and testicular hormones. Thus, understanding the endocrine profile and its’ interaction with semen parameters is an important step during the evaluation of fertility status of men.
The purpose: The study aims to evaluate the interaction between hormonal profile (follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and testosterone) and semen parameters in a group of men with impaired semen parameters.
Method
It is a comparative study which included a total of 90 men, 70 men were divided into 5 groups according to the results of SFA and 20 men were considered as a control group who had normal SFA. Serum was taken from all for men measuring testosterone, LH, and FSH concentrations using special Kits and the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA).
Result
The study showed that serum levels of FSH, LH and testosterone were significantly high (p-value ≤ 0.05) in azoospermia group followed by oligoasthenoteratozospermia and oligozospermia respectively. Together, men with impaired semen parameters had significantly higher (p-value 0.023) serum level of FSH than control group, with no significant difference regarding both serum levels of LH and testosterone.
Conclusions
There is a close interaction between semen parameters and hormonal profile of men who complain with subfertility and assessing hormonal profiles together with seminal fluid analysis is essential during the evaluation of fertility potential of such group of men.
