| Abstract | ||
| Background: Major depressive disorder is the most common mental disorder, and it is the third leading cause of disease worldwide. Suicide is an intentional attempt to end one’s life that results in death. Psychoeducational intervention is an important approach for reducing the severity of suicidal attempts in major depressive. Methods: A quantitative design (quasi-experimental) study was conducted on 60 outpatients with suicidal attempts among major depressive disorder patients attending Psychiatric Hospital Shahid Dr. Heamn in Sulaymaniyah City. The sample was divided into two groups, the experimental group (n=30) and the control group (n=30). The criterion to split subjects into two groups was based on self-section. The patients were interviewed by the researcher for data collection (pre-test). The six-session psycho-education intervention program was implemented for the experimental group for six weeks, 60 minutes per session. A post-test was done on both groups. Data was analyzed through SPSS-22. Results: The experimental group showed a marked significant reduction in mean and median scores ,frequency and percentage of suicidal attempts and severity level of depression (Beck Depression Inventory) in the post-test compared to the control group (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Implementing a psychoeducational intervention program on suicidal attempts among patients with major depressive disorder has a marked significant effect rate of suicidal attempt on the severity level of depression, simultaneously with pharmacological treatment. | ||
