| Abstract | ||
| There is a complex relationship between translation and international law, which focuses on the fact that law cannot achieve an international character without translation as an important tool of international communication. This paper investigates non- equivalence in the translation of international treaties in English to Arabic and explores language and legal differences, which affect the implementation of the treaties and may lead to disagreements. It provides reasons behind non-equivalence; divergent legal systems, cultural differences, and linguistic differences. The comparative analysis of the study exposes the problems of English-Arabic legal translation in the form of disputed translations such as UN Resolution 242 (1967). Results indicate that equivalence is interrupted by cultural, legal, and linguistic barriers where Arabic translations tend to introduce redundant words or omit critical ideas and change the original meaning. The paper highlights the difficulty in translating international agreements and the importance of being accurate in order to guarantee legal certainty, enforcement, and cross-jurisdictional cooperation. By highlighting practical consequences of non-equivalence, it calls for heightened attention to accuracy in legal translation to mitigate diplomatic and legal conflicts. | ||
