| Abstract | ||
| This study seeks to examine the key features of Iraq’s role in Iranian–Saudi relations and to highlight Iraq’s efforts to achieve a form of regional balance that serves the interests of all parties. This role is grounded in Iraq’s possession of effective diplomatic instruments capable of containing most of the contentious issues between the two states. Iraq represents a central within the hierarchy of Iranian–Saudi relations and constitutes one of the principal variables shaping the nature of either conflict or cooperation between them. Geographic proximity, along with social and cultural interconnectedness, has been among the most significant factors underpinning Iraq’s distinctive role in pursuing regional balance between the two regional powers and in mitigating the intensity of rivalry and conflict between them over several decades. In addition, patterns of mutual economic interdependence linking Iraq with both Iran and Saudi Arabia have further reinforced this role. Within this context, Iraqi foreign policy has relied on a range of diplomatic tools, including mediation, the narrowing of disagreement gaps, and the hosting of joint meetings and dialogues with Iranian and Saudi delegations. These efforts reflect Iraq’s sustained endeavor to foster an environment of strategic balance and regional security and stability, thereby reducing the likelihood of protracted wars and conflicts that impose severe burdens on the peoples and governments of the region. | ||
