Relationship between Gonadotropin Hormones, Body Mass Index, and Vitamin D Status in Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome | ||

| Abstract | ||
| Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine disorder that is linked to physiological and reproductive abnormalities. The present investigation was aimed at assessing the association between serum vitamin D, body mass index (BMI), and gonadotropin hormones in women with PCOS and also comparison of these biomarkers in various BMI groups. a total of 100 women diagnosed with PCOS were included in this cross-sectional study. A chemiluminescent immunoassay was employed to assess vitamin D levels, while the ELISA technique was employed to quantify LH and FSH hormones. The outcomes showed that BMI (r = -0.468, P < 0.001), LH (r = -0.343, P = 0.0005), and LH/FSH ratio (r = -0.386, P = 0.0001) were all inversely associated with vitamin D, whereas FSH (r = 0.249, P = 0.012) was positively associated. vitamin D levels decreased during the transition from normal weight to obese across BMI groups (28.4 ± 16.8 vs. 14.8 ± 5.6, P = 0.0001). Additionally, the LH/FSH ratio in obese patients was elevated (2.8 ± 1.1 vs. 1.5 ± 0.9 in normal weight, P = 0.0002), and LH levels increased significantly with increasing BMI, while FSH levels were reduced in the obese group. The findings suggest that vitamin D and BMI are important and have an association with hormonal fluctuations in women with PCOS and can be important in determining the clinical heterogeneity of PCOS. | ||
