| Aims: The current study aimed to identify the role of Saudi universities in enhancing the quality of life of their students and to examine their role in developing students’ attitudes toward educational sustainability as perceived by male and female students. The study also sought to determine the extent to which universities contribute to providing a university environment that supports quality of life through the programs, courses, activities, and services they offer, which contribute to fulfilling students’ academic, social, psychological, and developmental needs. In addition, the study aimed to investigate statistically significant differences in the responses of the research sample regarding the role of universities in enhancing quality of life and attitudes toward educational sustainability according to the variables of gender, academic specialization, and academic year, thereby helping to determine the extent to which students’ perceptions of this role vary according to their academic and demographic characteristics. Methodology: The study adopted a descriptive approach, as it was appropriate to the nature and objectives of the research. A questionnaire was used as a data-collection instrument to obtain the participants’ views and perceptions regarding the role of Saudi universities in enhancing quality of life and attitudes toward educational sustainability. The study was conducted on a sample of (736) male and female students from Saudi universities in Riyadh. The participants were distributed according to a number of variables, namely gender, academic specialization, and academic year, allowing differences in their responses to be examined according to these variables. The participants’ responses were analyzed using appropriate statistical methods to determine the level of universities’ role in the two variables under investigation, as well as to test the statistical significance of differences among students’ responses according to the variables specified in the study. Results: The results showed that the role of Saudi universities in enhancing the quality of life of their students was at a high level, indicating that students perceived the presence of effective university efforts that contribute to improving their quality of life and providing a supportive educational and university environment. The results also demonstrated that the role of universities in promoting students’ attitudes toward educational sustainability was at a high level, reflecting the importance of university practices and programs in developing students’ awareness of educational sustainability concepts and encouraging them to adopt positive attitudes toward them. Furthermore, the results indicated that there were no statistically significant differences in the responses of the research sample regarding the role of universities in enhancing quality of life and attitudes toward educational sustainability attributable to gender. No statistically significant differences were also found according to academic year. In contrast, statistically significant differences were found in the participants’ responses according to academic specialization, with the differences favoring students in practical specializations, indicating differences in students’ perceptions of the university’s role in enhancing quality of life and educational sustainability according to the nature of their academic specializations. Conclusions: The study concluded that Saudi universities in Riyadh play a significant role in enhancing students’ quality of life and developing their attitudes toward educational sustainability, reflecting the importance of the role played by higher education institutions in achieving the dimensions of sustainable development and improving students’ university life. The results also showed that students’ perceptions of this role did not differ according to gender or academic year, whereas they varied according to academic specialization, with a higher level of perception among students in practical specializations. This underscores the need for universities to continue developing their efforts and practices aimed at enhancing quality of life and educational sustainability rather than limiting their focus to traditional academic aspects. Accordingly, the study recommends maintaining the high level achieved by universities in this area and expanding courses, programs, and student activities related to quality of life and educational sustainability. It also recommends organizing seminars, conferences, and scientific and awareness-raising events that contribute to promoting a culture of sustainability and enhancing students’ awareness of its importance, thereby supporting their ability to participate effectively in achieving sustainable development within the university and the wider community. |
