Soft Skills and Their Relationship with Positive Thinking among Female Students in the Department of Islamic Studies at King Saud University: An Evaluative Study
College of Education, King Saud University- Saudi Arabia
Abstract
Aims: The study aimed to identify the level of soft skills among female students in the Department of Islamic Studies at King Saud University and to determine their level of positive thinking, as well as to examine the nature of the relationship between soft skills and positive thinking. The study also sought to investigate whether the level of soft skills and their dimensions, as well as the level of positive thinking and its domains, differed according to certain academic variables, namely academic year and cumulative grade point average (GPA). In addition, the study aimed to present a proposed framework that could be utilized to develop soft skills and positive thinking among female students by achieving integration between the two and incorporating them into the educational process, thereby contributing to enhancing students’ personal, social, and academic capabilities and better preparing them for the demands of university life and their future professional lives. Methodology: The study adopted a descriptive correlational approach, given its suitability to the nature of the study objectives and variables. The theoretical framework was based on a number of theories explaining soft skills and positive thinking, including Goleman’s theory of emotional intelligence as an interpretation of soft skills, in addition to rational emotive behavior theory, Jansen’s theory, and Costa’s theory as frameworks for interpreting positive thinking. To achieve the study objectives, the researcher developed two scales: one to measure the level and dimensions of soft skills and the other to measure the level and domains of positive thinking. The suitability of both research instruments for the purposes for which they were developed was verified. The two instruments were administered to a random sample of (222) female students from the Department of Islamic Studies at King Saud University. The data were collected and analyzed using statistical methods appropriate to the nature of the data and the study variables, with the aim of determining the levels of soft skills and positive thinking, examining the correlational relationship between them, and testing differences according to academic year and cumulative GPA. Results: The results showed that the overall level of soft skills among female students in the Department of Islamic Studies was at a moderate level, with a mean of (3.06) and a standard deviation of (0.77). The results also indicated that the overall level of positive thinking among the students was likewise at a moderate level, with a mean of (2.96) and a standard deviation of (0.64). These findings indicate that the students possess an adequate degree of soft skills and positive thinking; however, their levels still require further support and development through educational and training programs and practices. The results also revealed a statistically significant positive correlation at the (0.01) level between soft skills and positive thinking among the students, indicating that higher levels of soft skills are associated with higher levels of positive thinking. In contrast, the results showed no statistically significant differences in the dimensions of soft skills or the domains of positive thinking attributable to academic year. No statistically significant differences were also found according to cumulative GPA, indicating that the levels of the two variables under investigation were not substantially influenced by these two variables among the participants. Conclusions: The study concluded that female students in the Department of Islamic Studies possess moderate levels of soft skills and positive thinking, highlighting the need for greater attention to the development of these aspects within university academic programs rather than focusing solely on specialized knowledge and information. The study also confirmed the existence of a positive correlational relationship between soft skills and positive thinking, suggesting that developing either of the two may contribute to supporting the other and that integrating both aspects represents an important approach to enhancing the students’ personal and academic development. Furthermore, the absence of statistically significant differences according to academic year and cumulative GPA indicates the importance of providing soft-skills and positive-thinking development programs for all students, regardless of their academic level or academic achievement. Accordingly, the study highlights the importance of adopting an integrated educational framework that focuses on developing communication skills, emotional regulation, cooperation, problem-solving, and decision-making, alongside fostering positive thinking and the ability to deal constructively with academic and life situations and challenges. Such an approach may contribute to preparing female students with more integrated personal, social, and cognitive competencies and enhancing their ability to adapt and succeed in university and professional environments.
