| Aims: The present study aimed to investigate the effect of the Intermediate Teaching Strategy (MIT) on chemistry achievement and the development of network thinking among second-year middle school students, and to examine the effectiveness of this strategy in improving academic achievement compared with the conventional teaching method. The study also sought to determine the extent to which the Intermediate Teaching Strategy contributes to developing students’ network thinking through the use of a set of educational activities and instructional techniques that facilitate the organization of information and the clarification of relationships and connections among concepts in a more coherent manner, in accordance with the nature of chemistry and its cognitive requirements. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher formulated two null hypotheses to examine differences between the performance of the experimental and control groups in the variables of chemistry achievement and network thinking. Methodology: The study adopted an experimental approach using a quasi-experimental design, as it was appropriate to the nature and objectives of the study. The research sample consisted of (62) second-year middle school students, who were randomly assigned to two groups, with (31) students in the experimental group and (31) students in the control group. The experimental group was taught using the Intermediate Teaching Strategy (MIT), whereas the control group was taught using the conventional teaching method. To ensure the equivalence of the two groups prior to the experiment, they were matched on a number of variables that could affect the study results, namely chronological age measured in months, intelligence, a prior-knowledge test, and network thinking. The researcher also developed instructional plans based on the Intermediate Teaching Strategy, incorporating a range of instructional procedures and activities, including evaluative questions, concept maps, diagrams, information systems, and other activities aimed at organizing knowledge and establishing interconnected relationships among its components. In addition, the researcher developed an achievement test to measure students’ achievement in chemistry and a test to measure network thinking. The scientific properties of both research instruments were verified, including face validity, construct validity, and reliability, using appropriate procedures and statistical methods. The experiment was conducted during the first semester of the 2024–2025 academic year, and the data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Results: The results showed that the students in the experimental group, who studied chemistry using the Intermediate Teaching Strategy (MIT), outperformed the students in the control group, who were taught using the conventional method, on the chemistry achievement test. The results also demonstrated that the experimental group outperformed the control group on the network thinking test. These findings indicate that the use of the Intermediate Teaching Strategy contributed positively to improving the level of academic achievement among second-year middle school students, as well as to developing their ability to organize information and establish connections among concepts and relationships, which was reflected in their performance on the network thinking test. This may be explained by the fact that the strategy provides students with a more active role in the learning process by moving among questions, diagrams, concept maps, and information systems, thereby helping them construct knowledge in an interconnected manner rather than processing information as isolated elements. Conclusions: It can be concluded that the Intermediate Teaching Strategy (MIT) is an effective instructional strategy for teaching chemistry to second-year middle school students, given its positive effect on improving academic achievement and developing network thinking compared with the conventional teaching method. The findings also indicate that incorporating evaluative questions, concept maps, diagrams, and information systems into the instructional context contributes to increasing students’ engagement with the subject matter and helps them recognize and organize relationships among chemical concepts and information in a more integrated manner. Accordingly, the study emphasizes the importance of utilizing modern teaching strategies that position students as active participants in the learning process and avoiding reliance solely on traditional methods in teaching science subjects, particularly chemistry, which requires an understanding of the relationships and interactions among concepts. The adoption of the Intermediate Teaching Strategy may also contribute to providing a more interactive learning environment and enhancing students’ thinking skills, which may positively influence their academic achievement and their ability to process information in an organized and interconnected manner. |
