| Abstract | ||
| This study was conducted from 18 November to 20 March of next year at one of the plastic house at the Directorate of Research Center, Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, Erbil, Kurdistan Region-Iraq. It compared the local compost (top greenery) with local river soil, peat moss, and perlite separately and in different mixing ratios on the vegetative indexes of Festuca arundinacea Schreber and Cynodon dactylon L. in two separate experiments, each with three grass mowing’s. In the first experiment, the compost medium gave the best values for plant height (9.88cm), leaf area (2.15cm2) and chl.b (23.85mg/l). The highest chl.a and total chl. at 22.66 and 50.86 mg/l, respectively were from the 1 compost to 1 peatmoss mixture treatment, and heavyset fresh and dry weights at 15.30 and 6.93g, respectively recorded from the 1 silty loam: 1compost: 1peatmoss mixture. However, mowing time (7th March) gave the best results of studied parameters except plant height and dry weight (6.89cm and 5.87g respectively) obtained in the first mowing. For Festuca arundinacea Schreber the best height (11.80cm), chlorophyll b (48.53mg/l) and total chlorophyll (80.57 mg/l) were in the compost growing medium + 7th March treatment. The best leaf area (2.90cm2) resulted from the 1compost: 1peatmoss: 1perlite mixture + first mowing. The highest amount of chlorophyll a (33.23mg/l) was estimated in the mixture of 1silty loam: 1compost: 1perlite combined with the third mowing. The highest fresh and dry weights of vegetative part (17.95 and 7.55g respectively) were in the treatment of 1silty loam: 1compost: 1peatmoss mixture + second mowing. In the second experiment, compost recorded the best values for plant height (27.04cm) and vegetative growth dry weight (16.08g) after the third mowing, and gave highest vegetative growth fresh weight (32.40g) after the second mowing in the same medium.
