Clinical Finding: The Lower Nitric Oxide Levels, The Higher Lipid Peroxidation Levels and Atherogenic Index in Both Type I and Type II Diabetes | ||

| Abstract | ||
| The study was designed to find out the correlation between nitric oxide (NO) and both lipid peroxidation,and atherogenic index in two major types of diabetes (type I and type II). Nitric oxide was measured indirectly by its metabolites (nitrates and nitrites). Lipid peroxidation was measured in terms of malondialdehyde (MDA), while atherogenic (ATH) index was expressed as (LDL/HDL). Total 65 subjects were entered in the study and divided into three groups: control group that consisted of 25 healthy subjects, type I group that consisted of 19 patients, and type II group that consisted of 21 patients. The results showed a significant decrease in serum nitric oxide metabolites levels in type II diabetic patients in comparison with both type I and control groups. However NO levels were slightly (non significant) decreased in type I group when compared to control group. MDA levels significantly elevated in the two patient groups when compared to control group with non significant differences between type I and type II groups. Lipids parameters LDL, VLDL, triglycerides, and cholesterol elevated in both two patient groups significantly compared to control. Whereas HDL significantly decreased in both patient groups compared to control group. Atherogenic (ATH) index consequently elevated in patient groups compared to control. A negative correlations between NO and each of MDA, LDL, ATH, TG, and CHO were obtained in type I and type II groups with high correlation coefficients. Whereas the strong correlation between NO and HDL in these patient groups was positive. It is concluded that NO associates inversely with lipid peroxidation process, atherogenic index and pro- atherogenic lipoproteins, which may add another factor to early identification and prognosis of cardiovascular disease in diabetic patients. الملخص | ||
