Abstract
Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) has been suggested as a non-specific marker in many tumors including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL).The aim of this study is to verify the relationship of serum LDH level to certain features at time of diagnosis of NHL. A prospective study was conducted at Medical city / Baghdad Teaching Hospital during the period of October 2005 till April 2007.The study included 82 patients with NHL and 80 healthy control subjects. For all patients routine investigations and other specific ones for staging purposes were done when possible. Serum LDH level was estimated in all patients and control subjects. High serum LDH level were significantly related to histological types(high and intermediate grade), advance stages of disease(III and IV), bulky disease, B-symptoms, splenomegaly, liver and bone marrow involvement, presence of mediastinal and/or hilar tumors, intra-abdominal lymphadenopathy and disease relapse. The serum LDH concentration, at time of diagnosis of NHL, is significantly related to histological type, advance stage of disease, bulky disease, B-symptoms, splenomegaly, liver and bone marrow involvement, presence of mediastinal and hilar tumors, intra-abdominal lymphadenopathy and disease relapse
