Current profile of thyroid carcinoma in thyroidectomy specimens | ||

| Abstract | ||
| Malignant thyroid tumors account for about 90% of the whole types of malignant endocrine tumors. This study included 360 thyroidectomy specimens. Collected from Al-Zahrawy and Al-Salaam teaching hospitals and private laboratories. From January 2004 to December 2005 to find out the frequency and the different histological types of thyroid carcinoma in thyroidectomy specimens. The study revealed 20 cases of thyroid carcinoma constituting 5.5% of all thyroid specimens. Thirteen cases were of papillary carcinoma type (65%), 3 cases of follicular carcinoma, 2 cases of medullary carcinoma and 2 cases of anaplastic carcinoma. The mean age was (43.2), with male to female ratio 9:11. It is showed that Thyroid carcinoma is common finding in thyroidectomy specimens and papillary carcinoma was the more common thyroid tumor.
