Abstract
The objective of the present study was to assess anemia status of sample pregnant and lactating women In Mosul City and to compare this with previous studies. A cross sectional study of the prevalence of anemia in pregnant and lactating women was carried out in Mosul city for the period of 1st of February through out 31 July, 2007. A random sample of women who came to primary health care centers for antenatal care was screened for anemia, which was defined as a hemoglobin concentration < 105 g/L. Of the (652) women screened, (229) were pregnant women and (423) were lactating women, (256) were from urban and (396) were rural. None of the (652) women enrolled in this study had clinical signs or symptoms suggestive of other serious medical or surgical conditions other than anemia. The study shows that there was no difference between the mean Hb values of rural and urban pregnant women. There was a non significant difference in the mean Hb levels of lactating women in urban and rural areas. As a recommendation: The government and Ministry of Health is aware of the problem of anemia in the country and should implement programs for its control. These programs include fortification of foodstuffs with iron, distribution of iron at antenatal and child health clinics, and nutrition education programs
