| Abstract | ||
| A prospective study of 56 patients who sustained blunt abdominal trauma seen in Tikrit Teaching Hospital over one year from Dec. 2005-Dec. 2006.The aim of study was to evaluate vital statistics regarding age, sex, mechanism of injury. Patterns of presentation, patterns of intra abdominal organ injuries associated injuries and mortality rates.It also describes various methods of investigations and their accuracy in detecting intra-abdominal injuries.Road traffics accidents continue to be a major cause of blunt abdominal trauma and the solid intra abdominal organs were predominantly involved (52% of total injuries).There was high incidence of associated injuries were diagnosed in 41 patients. The overall mortality rate was 12.4% (7 patients only) mainly due to liver injury, head injury and retro peritoneal haematoma, 2 patients respectively of the various investigations done, plain X-ray was a poor indicator of injury.Peritoneal tapping was more informative while for diagnostic peritoneal lavage and u/s was done | ||
