| Abstract | ||
| Brucellosis is a common, classical zoonotic disease of worldwide distribution. The most dependable serologic test used in our country is Rose Bengal test (RBT), although high percentage of false negative results is recorded. In this study, the incidence of brucellosis and prozone phenomenon was recorded, and the efficacy of the simple micro dilution Rose Bengal agglutination test was evaluated. The study was carried out on 155 suspected patients with brucellosis (100 female, 55 male) attended Azadi General Hospital and Kirkuk General Hospital in March and April 2005. Questionnaire included genital, residence, duration (recent or past infection) and contact to animal. Sera were collected and tested for brucellosis using conventional (RBT). The conventional RBT gave positive result for 41 (26.7%) sera samples. The rest sera which gave negative result were retested by simple micro-dilution Rose Bengal test. Out of 114 sera, 47 (41.2%) gave positive reaction. Thus, the sum of positive tests is 88 (56.7%). The prozone phenomenon happened mostly in patients with past infection [35 (74.4%)]. No differences were observed in the occurrence of prozone phenomenon between male and female. In conclusion, the prozone phenomenon may find out and observe in 41% of negative serology results in those persons with suspected Malta fever, using simple dilution RBT | ||
