Abstract
In this research the natural Bentonite which cannot be much better used in the industrial fields is activated by using a base solution (in this research , Sodium Carbonate Na2 CO3) where calcium ions ca++ present in natural Bentonite are exchanged by Sodium ions Na+ present in the base solution. The activation is done by using various weight persents of Na2Co3 of the total weight of the Bentonit as follows: (1%,2%,3%,4%,5%,6%,7% and 8%).4% was taken to be the best one because the activated Bentonite reaches the highest case of swelling Where its volume is increased Four times. In this simplified method ,the objective of this research was achieved by improving Bentonite by increasing its surface area from 56m2/gm to 76.8m2/gm and its porosity volume from 0.0588cm3/g to 0.062cm3/g. For better results Na2 CO3 4wt% was used for activating the natural Bentonite then the result was treated with HCL 10% where the surface area is increased from 56m2/gm to 96.76m2/gm and the poresity volume from0.0588cm3/g to 0.0677cm3/g. The natural and activated Bentionte was detected using X-ray device XRD and infrared ray FTIR. The specific surface area, pores volume, particle size , pH and volumetric density were also measured separately each one by its device while the chemical analysis of the Bentonite was done by atomice absorption device and the conventional weight method. Note : The natural Bentonite is obtained from an area called (Turaifawi) in Al -Anbar city in Iraq by the General Co. of Geological scanning . It contains 70% of Montemorlonite and its ation exchange capacity CEC is 65mg/100gm
