| Abstract | ||
| This study has been performed to detect any structural changes in the kidney of rats which have received intraperitoneal injections of vitamin C. Twelve adult male Wistar Albino rats has been used in this study, six of them were given vitamin C in a dose of (100 mg/kg body weight) intraperitonealy twice per week for one month, while the other six animals were injected normal saline intraperitonealy also and for the same period and served as a control group. All the animals were scarified at the end of the experiment, then small pieces of kidney were prepared for light microscopic examination. Some sections were obtained from the paraffin wax blocks and stained by H&E stain, while other sections were stained by Orcin-van gieson stain. Finally the slides were examined by Bx51 Olympus light microscope. The main results include the followings: -Expansion of the glomerular tuft of some glomeruli nearly obliterating the urinary spaces. -Collagen fibers proliferation in the cortex of kidney. -Focal areas of haemorrhage in the cortex of kidney. -Focal areas of mononuclear cells infiltration within the interstitium of the cortex. This is the first study to report that vitamin C causes proliferation of collagen fibers in the cortex of the kidney, in addition to the obliteration of the urinary spaces. | ||
