Abstract
50 fish type Pseudopocrypte dentatus were collected from the Faw area south of Basra and males isolated from females according to the shape of dorsal fin with an average weight of (59.3) g and an average length of (14.8) cm for each fish. The fish were brought to Baghdad and placed in plastic tubs to adapt them to the new environment. It was observed that the percentage of male fish was around 40% of the total fishes collected for this study, while the number of females was 60% of the total of these fish. male were isolated from the females according to the apparent signs of differentiation for the males have dorsal fins high like a reef and their bodies are larger than females, and are brightly colored with a body length less than the female body. Check was made then to figure out the existence of external parasites, it was observed that the fish rub their bodies strongly within internal wall of plastic vessel and for both sexes, and their bodies were examined using hand magnifying lens to diagnose the parasites appearing on the bodies of these fishes. Three types of external parasites were diagnosed; 70% of which were hook worms Lernaea, type Lernaea cyprinacea, and 20% of the infestation were the fish lice Argulus, type Argulus foliaceus, whereas the other 10% of the infection, especially females, were infected with the parasite Ergasilus sieboldi, near the gills specifically, the infection is likely because the females preceed the males to the breeding areas in the mating flight at the beginning of the month of June as shown through the total number of the fish which was (60%) females and (40%) males. The presence of a parasites linked to gender-specific, without the other was not noticed.
