Abstract
The objective of the present study to identify the effect of toxicity with plant Senecio vulgaris in rats by studying the clinical signs and some biochemical, hematological criteria and pathological changes.In this study 75 of albino rats have been exploited and divided into three groups, 25 rats for each, the average ages were about 3-5 months. (5%) of plant powder was given to the first group for one month, while (10%) of plant powder was given to the 2nd group at the same time, and the 3rd group as a control. The results showed that rats showed signs of inappetance and some of it showed nervous signs. Also an increase in serum activity of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatease (ALP) with significant decrease in total serum protein concentration, decrease in hemoglobin, packed cell volume, and erythrocytes values of the exposed groups. While Gross pathological changes that observed in liver were similar in both groups exposed to plant which characterized by enlargement of liver with diffuse necrotic foci in sub hepatic capsule with sever congestion. Microscopically an important pathological changes were observed in 2nd group which showed giant hepatocytes (megalohepatocytes) and increased number of Kupffer cells with focal accumulation of inflammatory cells (MONs).
