Effects of seasons of the year and breeding season on semen parameters in Awassi Rams | ||

| Abstract | ||
| The study was conducted to knowlage the effect of year seasons and reproductive seasons on semen parameter of Awassi rams. 8 Awassi rams aged 1.5-2 years and weighted 50-60 kg were used in this study. Semen samples were collected weekly using the artificial vagina. Samples were transported immediately to water path 37 ºC at the artificial insemination lab. The semen samples were evaluated for volume, mass and individual motility, percentage of live and normal sperms, also the pH and semen concentration were measured. The results showed that the ejaculate volume ranged between 0.2-2 ml, average 0.93 ± 0.34 ml. The concentration of semen samples ranged between 0.83 and 1.99 x 109 with an average of 1.74 ± 0.19 x 109 sperm/ml. The pH of seminal plasma ranged between 5.8 and 7.5, average 6.52 ± 0.3. The mass and individual motility was between 50 and 95% with an average of 92.32 ± 8.06 and 90.66 ± 7.85 for mass and individual motility, respectively. The percentage of live sperm ranged between 52 and 96% and average 86.9 ± 5.35%, while the percentage of normal sperm was between 70 and 98% with an average of 89.47 ± 4.44 %. It was concluded that the season has an effect on semen quality of Awassi rams especially on ejaculate volume, pH and percentage of normal sperms | ||
