Effect of Propolis extract on post – weaning concentrations of T3, T4 and TSH in Turkish Awassi lambs | ||

| Abstract | ||
| The research was conducted at sheep and goat research station of the state board for Agricultural Research in Abu Ghraib (20 km west of Baghdad), to investigate the effect of propolis extract on T3, T4 and TSH hormones levels of the Turkish Awassi lambs. Twenty four Turkish Awassi lambs were divided randomly into 4 groups (6 lambs each). First group (G1) was left without treatment and considered as control group (G1). While the second (G2), third (G3) and fourth (G4) group were orally given 5, 10 and 15 ml of Propolis extract, twice weekly for three months. Results showed a highly significant (P<0.01) effect of the fourth treatment (G4) on the T3 hormones. Results showed a significant increased in T3 level in the Fourth group as compared to the other groups during the experimental peroid. While there was a significant increase in T3 level in the third group as compared as the first and second group after the second and third month of the treatment. There was no significant effect of the oral treatment in both second and forth group except the third treatment. There was outperformed of the T3 hormone in the second and third month as compared to the first month. Results indicated a significant an increased in T4 hormone in forth group as compared to the other treatment after one month from the starting of the treatment which were 0.05 ± 0.10 , 0.03 ±4.12, 0.05 ± 4.20, 0.12 ±4.20 nano gram ml for G1, G2, G3 and G4 respectively. Results also showed an increased in TSH hormone higher than the control group which 0.01± 0.23 nano gram ml during the first month of the treatment. In conclusion treating Turkish Awassi lambs with the Propolis extract (5, 10 & 15 ml) caused an increase in T3, T4 and TSH hormones which reflect an increase in the metabolic rate, feed conversation and daily gain which interring caused an increase in the proclivity in the Turkish Awassi male lambs | ||
