| Abstract | ||
| The study involving the patients admitted to the pediatric department at the Tikrit Teaching Hospital during the period from the 1st of January to the 31st of December 2004 . The total number of admissions was 4561 case.. The highest age of admission is between 0-1 year and the lowest age is 5-10 years of age (44.8% and 8.1% respectively ). The two most common diseases for admission are diarrhea and pneumonia (31.4% and 26.9% of the total diseases respectively ). The total number of deaths was 130 case. The crude death rate among the whole admissions was 28/1000. The highest mortality is at the neonatal period (64.6%). The neonatal death rate was 175/1000 , the post neonatal death rate was 19/1000 , the infant death rate 56/1000 , the 1-5 years child death rate was 8/1000 , and the 5-10 years child death rate was 1.9/1000 . Sepsis was the commonest cause of deaths among the total admissions (33.8%) . Our study recommends the improvement in the knowledge of medical personnel and improvement in the medical care and the resuscitation practice at the neonatal care unit | ||
