| Abstract | ||
| A cross sectional study is done on children aged 6mo-5year attained the outpatient clinic in Tikrit teaching hospital and Beji general hospital during the period from the 1st of January to the last of June 2005. The total number of cases included were 200 cases from which 113 cases are anemic (prevalence 56.5%) and the total patients with iron deficiency anemia were 58 case (29%). Males were 23 cases while females were 35 cases. The majority of cases are in the age group 6mo-1year (41.1%)and most of the cases are from the rural areas (62.1%). Exclusive breast feeding is the commonest way of feeding in the affected group (54.8%).Most of the affected children are belong to illiterate mothers (63.8%).History of PICA and pallor of skin and mucus membrane and are present in 75.9% and 84.5% respectively. Most of the affected cases have mild malnutrition (53.4%).Hepatosplenomegaly was present in 63% and change in behavior was present in 56.9% of the affected cases. The range of serum iron among our study cases was 5.10-6.9 micromol/L for infants and 7.80-8.41 micromol/L for older children. Total iron binding capacity and the retics count are increased in 84.5% , 39.7%of cases respectively. Most of our affected cases have hemoglobin in the range of 5.1-9.9 gm/dl. The study recommend for establishing new screening programs for early detection of iron deficiency anemia. | ||
