| Conjunctivitis refers to any inflammatory condition of the membrane that lines the eyelids and covers the exposed surface of the sclera. It is the most common cause of "red eye." The etiology can usually be determined by a careful history and an ocular examination, but culture is occasionally necessary to establish the diagnosis or to guide therapy. Conjunctivitis is commonly caused by bacteria and viruses. The present study is conducted to determine the prevalence of conjunctivitis at Tikrit Teaching Hospital, and to study some epidemiological factors, age, sex and residence, affecting the prevalence of this disease. This study is performed from February to June 2004. The clinical diagnosis is carried out at Ophthalmology department. Sterile cotton swabs were immediately transmitted to the laboratory and streaked onto blood, chocolate and MacConkey's agars, then incubated at 37°C for 24 hours. Isolated organisms were identified according to the conventional methods of Cowan and Steel. Antibiotic susceptibility test is performed to the most common isolates using disc diffusion method. A total of 182 patients with conjunctivitis were included in this study. Redness of eye was associated with all cases of conjunctivitis 182 (100%) followed by Itching 142 (78%). Staphylococcus aureus had the highest percentage of occurrence 33 (42%), followed by Streptococcus pneumoniae 21 (27%) and Staphylococcus epidermidis 9 (12%). The prevalence of allergic conjunctivitis was higher than infective conjunctivitis, and the prevalence of this disease is affected by the age, sex and there is no effect of residence on the prevalence of this disease. According antibiotic sensitivity, it has been found that norfloxacin is the most effective antibiotic against tested isolates. | ||
